Statement
Baltimore native, Lauren R. Lyde, is a realist painter whose process begins in search of nostalgic tales and legends that speak to contemporary issues in American culture. She draws inspiration for her work from an archive of photographs taken of African Americans in their daily lives; acquisitions from friends, family or anyone willing to let her pore through their photo albums.
Her studio practice explores the full range of human sentiment involved in forming meaningful interpersonal relationships. In a culture that can be short on generosity and kindness, Lyde asks viewers to consider what it means to be part of an inclusive society and how to be responsible for making it a reality at the same time. Lyde’s current body of work evokes the wonder and exploration of childhood adventure as a starting point to engage audiences on wider social and political subjects.
“Through figurative paintings, I try to capture moments that depict how the practice of inclusion is perceived and negotiated in our daily lives. All of my work is created in the spirit of philanthropy as a way to balance some of the ugliness of the world.”
